Teaching Kids About Money in the Digital Age

If you're like most parents, you've been looking for a good way to teach your kids about money that actually works in today's digital world. Traditional piggy banks and cash allowances are great, but they don't quite prepare children for the reality of digital banking and online transactions.

That's where VaultQuest comes in. VaultQuest is a virtual bank for kids that makes financial literacy fun and tangible. It gives kids their own virtual bank account that they can check anytime, just like you check your own, while you stay completely in control as a parent.

Best of all, you can start completely for free. Whether you want to build your own kiosk or use an old device, you have plenty of options to get started.

Setting Up Your Account

Getting started with VaultQuest takes less than a few minutes. Here's a quick overview of the setup process covered in the video above:

Step 1: Sign Up

Head to vaultquest.app on your device. You can explore the demo kiosk if you'd like, but when you're ready, click Get Started and sign in with Google.

Step 2: Add Your First Child

Once signed in, you'll add your first child to the system. Simply enter their name and click continue. This creates their virtual account instantly.

Step 3: Set Up Recurring Allowance

One of VaultQuest's most powerful features is automated allowances. You can set:

  • Weekly allowance - Great for younger kids learning week-to-week budgeting
  • Monthly allowance - Better for older kids managing longer-term finances
  • Custom amounts - Set whatever amount works for your family

For example, you might set $15 per week for your child.

Step 4: Add Starting Balance

If your child already has savings, perhaps from a birthday or holiday, you can add that initial amount right away. This gives them a real starting point and shows them their existing savings in their new digital account.

Managing Transactions from the Parent Dashboard

The parent dashboard is your command center for managing all transactions. Here's what you can do:

Adding Money (Deposits)

Did your child earn a bonus for cleaning their room? Adding money is simple:

  1. Click the deposit button
  2. Enter the amount (e.g., $3)
  3. Add a description (e.g., "cleaning room")
  4. Confirm the deposit

Your child's balance updates instantly. They can see exactly what they earned and why.

Withdrawing Money

When your child wants to buy something, you can log the withdrawal:

  1. Click the withdrawal button
  2. Enter the amount (e.g., $8)
  3. Add a description (e.g., "book")
  4. Confirm the withdrawal

Every transaction is tracked with the date and description, so your child can see exactly where their money goes. This transparency is key to building financial awareness.

Setting Up the Kiosk

The kiosk is what makes VaultQuest special. It's a dedicated display where your child can view their account, much like a real ATM. Whether you've 3D printed your own enclosure or you're using an old tablet, setup is straightforward.

Pairing Your Kiosk

  1. Click Pair Kiosk in the app
  2. Enter the pairing code shown on your kiosk screen
  3. That's it! The kiosk is now connected

Once paired, the kiosk stays up to date in near real-time. When you add allowance or log a purchase, your child can see the update happen immediately. This makes money feel real and tangible.

Customizing the Experience

Personalize with Colors

Every child is different, and VaultQuest lets them express their personality. You can customize the kiosk colors to match your child's preferences:

  • Modern styles
  • Classic themes
  • Fun color combinations

New themes are added regularly, so there's always something fresh to try.

Sleep Mode

After a short period of inactivity, the kiosk goes into sleep mode to save power. When your child walks over and wakes it up, they can immediately see all their account information.

Setting Savings Goals

Savings goals are one of VaultQuest's most valuable features for teaching financial literacy. Here's how to set them up:

  1. Go to your child's account details
  2. Click New Goal
  3. Enter what they're saving for (e.g., "New Bike")
  4. Set the target amount (e.g., $100)
  5. Optionally set a target date
  6. Confirm the goal

The goal appears on the dashboard, and your child can add funds toward it anytime. For example, they might decide to put $12 of their savings toward their bike goal. The visual progress tracking helps them stay motivated.

Sharing with Other Caregivers

VaultQuest understands that parenting often involves multiple people. You can easily share a child's account with:

  • Co-parents - Both parents can manage the account
  • Grandparents - Perfect for birthday money or special treats
  • Other guardians - Anyone who helps care for your child

Simply click the share icon by your child's name, enter their email address, and click share. You can share with multiple people, making it easy for everyone to contribute to your child's financial education.

Additional Settings

VaultQuest offers several other helpful features:

  • Currency selection - Use your local currency
  • Balance corrections - Fix any mistakes easily
  • Nickname support - Maybe your child goes by a different name
  • Activity history - View all transactions at any time

Start Your Family's Financial Journey

VaultQuest makes teaching financial literacy engaging and practical. Kids learn by doing, with real (virtual) money they can track and manage themselves. Parents stay in control while giving their children the independence they need to develop good money habits.
